UN Meeting to Tackle Antimicrobial Resistance

On September 21st, global leaders from the United Nations (UN) will convene to discuss a major global health threat – antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Antimicrobial resistance kills 700,000 people worldwide each year, and the number could reach 10 million per year by 2050. Only three times before has the UN convened heads of state to tackle an urgent health problem. HIV, Ebola, and noncommunicable diseases (i.e. diabetes, obesity) are the only other issues that prompted similar action.
