5 Excellent Cable Modems: Buy Your Own and Avoid Rental Fees

Nowadays, everyone connects to the Internet in one way or another. Whether it is by a wired connection or Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence), some sort of modem (modulator-demodulator) is used. Based on your service provider, you will be using a broadband service that comes with a cable modem, DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), or Satellite. If you happen to live in an area where there is no broadband available, you can still use the much slower dialup. Cable companies charge a rental fee for using their modems. However, you can purchase a higher quality modem and avoid paying the extra charge. Just make sure you consult your service provider's list of compatible modems. I purchased an ARRIS SURFboard SB6183 which has already paid for itself. I don't like to be “nickeled and dimed”.
